India Highlights Clean Energy Push as Union Minister Meets Global Leaders at WEF 2026

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi held a series of high-level engagements with global leaders, policymakers, and investors on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 in Davos, Switzerland, reinforcing India’s position as a key driver of the global energy transition.

India’s Renewable Energy Progress Takes Centre Stage

Speaking at the Davos summit 2026 session ‘Resilient Infrastructure for Growth’, the Union Minister highlighted India’s ability to scale infrastructure while maintaining system resilience. He noted that India has achieved 267 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity as of December 2025, placing the country firmly on track to meet its 2030 climate and energy targets.

He attributed this progress to strong policy frameworks, expansion of domestic manufacturing, grid modernisation, energy storage deployment, and emerging initiatives in geothermal and nuclear energy. Emphasising the need for long-term funding, Shri Joshi called for patient capital, blended finance, and closer collaboration among governments, private players, and multilateral development banks to support an inclusive global energy transition.

Sustainability as an Economic Growth Driver

Delivering the keynote address at the roundtable ‘Delivering Sustainability at Scale: Pathways for Global Transformation’, Shri Joshi underlined that sustainability has moved from the margins to the core of economic growth. He said the key challenge for this decade is not whether the transition should happen, but how sustainability can be delivered at scale, at speed, and in a way that strengthens economies.

India’s Energy Transition Philosophy

Reiterating India’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2070, the Minister said India’s energy strategy is guided by the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, One Earth, One Family, One Future. He stressed that India views sustainability as a broad economic and societal transformation, not just a technological shift, with renewable energy forming the backbone of future growth.

Bilateral Meetings Strengthen Clean Energy Cooperation

On the sidelines of WEF, Shri Joshi held multiple bilateral meetings to deepen international cooperation:

Oman: In discussions with Dr. Said Mohammed Ahmed Al Saqri, Economic Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of Oman, talks focused on collaboration in solar, wind, green hydrogen, and energy storage. Potential areas included joint manufacturing, renewable-powered hydrogen hubs, port-based export infrastructure, and cooperation under the International Solar Alliance and the One Sun One World One Grid initiative.

Belgium: Meeting Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, the Minister reaffirmed the India–Belgium partnership in research and development, offshore wind, solar energy, and green taxonomy.

Kuwait: In talks with Subaih Abdul Aziz Al-Mukhaizeem, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, discussions centred on renewable energy investments, India’s solar module and cell ecosystem, and potential investments by the Kuwait Investment Authority.

Engagement with Global Investors

Shri Joshi also met global investors to encourage long-term clean energy investments in India. Discussions with La Caisse, led by CEO Charles Emond and COO Sarah Bouchard, focused on scaling climate and clean energy investments and aligning India’s renewable ambitions with the group’s USD 400 billion climate action commitment by 2030.

In another meeting, Ingka Group, which operates IKEA, expressed interest in entering India’s renewable energy sector across solar, wind, and hybrid solutions. The Minister highlighted India’s stable policy environment and investment-friendly ecosystem.

India Pavilion at WEF 2026

The Union Minister attended the inauguration of the India Pavilion at WEF 2026 alongside several Union Ministers and State Chief Ministers, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. During the event, Shri Joshi also launched the Green Investment Handbook titled ‘The India Story’, aimed at showcasing India’s clean energy investment opportunities.
