The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised India’s GDP growth forecast for the financial year 2026–27 to 7%, up from its earlier estimate of 6.4% in July. The revised outlook reflects stronger-than-expected economic momentum, supported by domestic demand and activity in the services sector.
The IMF announced the revision on October 13, 2026, in its latest World Economic Outlook report. The upgrade keeps India among the fastest-growing major economies, even as global economic uncertainties continue.
What Is Driving India’s Growth?
According to the IMF, resilient domestic demand and strong services activity are supporting India’s growth outlook. Household spending, a large and expanding domestic market, favourable demographics and continued structural reforms are among the factors contributing to the economy’s momentum.
India’s economy grew by 7.8% in the April–June quarter of FY27, providing further support for the improved growth projections.
The IMF has also raised its GDP growth forecast for FY28 to 7%, from its earlier estimate of 6.7%, indicating expectations of continued economic expansion over the next two financial years.
How Does India’s Outlook Compare With Global Growth?
The IMF’s latest projections come against a backdrop of global economic uncertainty, including geopolitical tensions and higher oil prices. These factors could put pressure on energy-importing economies such as India.
For the global economy, the IMF projects growth of 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027. India’s higher projected growth rate highlights the role of domestic demand and services in supporting its economic performance.
