What is a Bonus issue?

A Bonus issue is when a company gives existing shareholders free additional shares. Bonus Shares are issued by way of capitalisation of profits or reserves of the Company. The main purpose is to broad base the share capital of the Company. The issue of bonus shares does not entail any cash outflow. This doesn't change the total value of your investment, but it increases the number of shares you hold.
