Federal Reserve Keeps Rates Unchanged

The US Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, maintaining the target range at 3.75%–4%. The decision came despite concerns about elevated inflation, with two members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voting in favour of a quarter-percentage-point hike.

The 10–2 vote highlights a difference of opinion among policymakers over whether interest rates should rise further to bring inflation under control or remain unchanged while the Fed assesses more economic data.

Why Did the Fed Hold Interest Rates Steady?

The Fed’s decision to maintain rates follows a quarter-percentage-point increase in September. By holding rates steady this time, the central bank has chosen to wait for more information before deciding its next move.

In its post-meeting statement, the Fed said inflation ‘remains elevated’. It also said that the accumulation of more information would help the committee determine the appropriate policy stance to bring inflation back to its 2% target.

The decision does not mean the Fed has ruled out another rate hike. Instead, policymakers appear divided on the timing of further action, with incoming inflation and economic data likely to influence their next decision.

Two FOMC Members Vote for a Rate Hike

Two of the 12 FOMC voters dissented from the decision to hold rates steady. Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack favoured increasing the benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage points.

Their votes indicate that some policymakers believe further tightening may be needed to address persistent inflation. The majority, however, opted to maintain the existing range while waiting for additional information.

The difference in views is important because the Fed’s interest rate decisions influence borrowing costs across the US economy, including mortgages, credit cards, business loans, and other forms of credit.

What Did Kevin Warsh Say About the Fed’s Next Move?

At the post-meeting news conference, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh indicated that the committee would continue assessing economic developments before making further policy decisions.

Warsh also announced a change to the Fed’s meeting schedule. One meeting in 2027 will focus exclusively on broad monetary policy strategy, without an interest rate vote or a policy statement expected. The aim is to give policymakers dedicated time to discuss longer-term questions about monetary policy.

The change separates a meeting focused on the Fed’s broader strategy from those used to decide its benchmark interest rate. It does not, however, indicate what the committee will decide at its next rate-setting meeting.

What Does the Fed’s Decision Mean for Markets?

The Fed’s interest rate decisions matter beyond the US. Changes in US interest rates can influence global borrowing costs, bond yields, currency movements, and investor appetite for risk.

For Indian markets, the Fed’s stance is one of several factors investors watch. US interest rates can affect foreign investor flows into emerging markets, the rupee’s movement against the dollar, and the relative attractiveness of investments across countries.

A pause in rate hikes may offer some relief to markets, but the impact depends on what investors expect the Fed to do next. If inflation remains elevated and policymakers signal further increases, markets could continue to face uncertainty.

For now, the Fed has kept rates unchanged while leaving its next move open. Inflation data, economic growth, and employment trends will remain important factors to watch as investors assess the outlook for US monetary policy.
