Is stamp duty applicable when purchasing mutual funds?
Yes, stamp duty is applicable on mutual fund purchases at a rate of 0.005%. This charge is automatically adjusted in the number of units allotted to the investor, not collected as an additional payment.
Example:
If you invest ₹10,000 in a mutual fund:
Stamp duty = ₹10,000 × 0.005% = ₹0.50
The net amount invested becomes ₹9,999.50.
If the NAV is ₹10, the units allotted will be ₹9,999.50 ÷ ₹10 = 999.95 units.
